Ahwatukee is a wonderful bedroom community just to the south of Phoenix & Sky Harbor Airport, which wraps around South Mountain. It is annexed by the City of Phoenix and formally known as “Ahwatukee Foothills Village”, and has a population of about 85,000. In April 2005, it was called by Money Magazine as one of America’s “Best Places to Live”. To search for properties for sale in Ahwatukee, it is best to use the three zip codes that lie solely in Ahwatukee, 85044, just west of I-10 Highway and to the east of South Mountain, 85048 which is also west of 1-10 Hwy and continues west into our “Ahwatukee Foothills” south of South Mountain., and 85045 which lies in the farthest west Foothills of Ahwatukee, to the south of South Mountain.
One of the main attractions to Ahwatukee Foothills is the access to the huge Phoenix city park in South Mountain, comprised of over 2500 square miles and which is the largest city park in the nation! With miles of trails, hikers, joggers, marathoners, tri-athletes, mountain bikers, horseback riders, and families go there to enjoy the fresh air and be surrounded by nature and wildlife within minutes. It’s almost impossible to believe that you feel so remote and removed from Phoenix, yet you’re still so close to the city and didn’t have to drive 1 hour to get there!
Another feature that folks love is the short commute to downtown Phoenix (about 20 minutes) and the 10-15 minutes it takes to get to Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport! Many airline employees live in the Ahwatukee Foothills for just this reason.
Ahwatukee Foothills Village was started as a retirement community in the 1970’s and expanded from there. You’ll find quaint little patio homes with small courtyards, many which are on the golf course. Ahwatukee Foothills has four golf courses, several grocery stores, large chain stores, excellent restaurants, both mom & pop as well as national chains.
The Equestrian Estates of Ahwatukee allows horses on the one acre home sites and provides a large riding ring, riding paths throughout the community and direct access to Phoenix South Mountain, if the home backs up to the Phoenix Preserve. Every home is a custom built home and the neighborhood is quite elegant.
Mountain Park Ranch is one of the largest master-planned communities in the Valley of the Sun, with over 3,200 homes, townhomes and condos. Designed by an architect from Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West, Mountain Park Ranch is 2,670 acres with winding roads, lushly landscaped center medians and lots of open spaces to showcase the natural beauty of the Ahwatukee Foothills. Nationally recognized for its design, Mountain Park Ranch features 3 recreation centers with lap lane pools, (one heated), hot tubs, “kiddie” play pools and equipment, tennis courts, sand court volley ball and miles of off road walking paths.
Lakewood is another magnificent community featuring a large man-made lake with huge water fountain and flowing falls over boulders into running streams in its one square mile neighborhood. It too is a sanctuary away from the hustle of Phoenix, just one mile from 1-10 Highway and adjacent to Pecos Road (Loop 202). The huge greenbelt running through the center of Lakewood allows great views of the lake, even for those who don’t live along the waterfront.
The Foothills is to the west of all other neighborhoods and was primarily developed by UDC Homes. Chandler Boulevard median glimmers and is a favorite scenic setting at Christmas with its glow of a million white lights during The Foothills Festival of Lights holiday display. It’s stunning views of “foothills” and staggering nine percent grade into the farthest west region give cyclists and joggers a great work out. The Foothills features The Foothills Golf Course and Club West Golf Course, as well as direct access to Telegraph Pass hiking trail with a killer hill to climb up and look out over the city of Phoenix, a favorite among hikers. Million dollar homes sit atop peaks on nearby foothills with breathtaking views.
